Meet the artist, Ralph Baker

My grandmother painted in oil, that is what young ladies did in 1918. I always remember her paintings all ornately framed covering the walls of her house. Her back garden was full of flowers, to supplement her income she made funeral wreaths (she was the single mother of two young boys and one daughter).

The painted image has always fascinated me. I believe that a painting says so much more about a subject than any other media.

I had my first artistic success at Tranby Primary School in 1967, for my impressions of Martian creatures. Interest in art continued through High School at Christchurch Grammar under the inspirational guidance of Ted Snell, from 1969 to 1971; Ted introduced me to another side of the world, I could not believe it, in art class their was always contemporary music on, Carol King, James Taylor, Neil Young and my favourite Elton John (Madman Across The Water) etc. I spent school holidays painting around my home in the North Perth area.

I studied Art & Design at WAIT (now Curtin University) 1974 to 75 before accepting a position as Assistant Audio Visual Technician (I didn’t get the job unless I did the Graphic Design, photography and videography) at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH) in 1976. My Manager was Mr John Feighan; he had a heart of gold and a grand vision.

But my most fabulous role model was John Twycross (JT as we called him), he taught me professionalism. John had had his own electronics company in Geraldton, worked as an ABC cameraman (in the days of 16mm film) and later at Mt Lawley Teachers College.

In 1987 I became a founding member of their Art Advisory Committee (1987 to 94). During my time at PMH, I became somewhat of an identity in Subiaco as I spent my lunch hours painting around the local area (one of which is the top image).

My work comprises mostly watercolour, of a personal nature. Family holidays, places I love, and people I find interesting.

I owned my own illustration business Ralph Baker Illustration from 1994 to 2004 providing a wide variety of illustrative services to hospitals, universities, private medical companies and research and development enterprises as well as trying the parent my two daughters.

The painting Shelby 1 (see portraits) was a finalist in the 2013 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize.

I am currently the Manager of the Medical Multimedia Design Department at Royal Perth Hospital.

My Travel Diary

In 1993 I started a Travel Diary, which comprised mostly of your journeys in our E2000 campervan. I truly loved this vehicle, and we had had many great trips in it when our daughters were little. These are some of the pages from that diary. The first page is my favourite, you can see Jessamy at the back of the Van on our first morning out on a 6 week adventure that I still cherish.
